Van Halen III

This album was the fans' first look at Van Halen with Gary Cherone at the vocal helm. The album was released in the U.S. on 03/17/98 and in Japan about a week earlier. It was certified gold on 08/19/98. 550,000 copies have been sold in the U.S. A limited edition version, limited to 15,000 copies, was made available in a tin box, with 11 connectable cards, Van Halen logo decal, and a guitar pick.

A German promotional version of the album was released on 02/20/98. To make sure these promos wouldn't fall into the wrong hands, almost a full month before the official release of the album, each disc was numbered.

An even earlier version of the album that included the song That's Why I Love You was released in November 1997 for Warner Brothers use only. Some copies of this release leaked to the public and are now in the hands of collectors.

The cover was picked by Alex, who considered it extremely funny.

Mike Post was picked by Gary to produce the album. He was brought in to oversee recording in April 1997, and on 09/30/97 the album was done.

Eddie used dozens of guitars on this album, testing hundreds of ways to record them. He also tried out his new 5150 II prototype amps for the album.
