Spanked

Eddie played a Danelectro 6-string bass through his Marshall on this track, from the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album. He also used his custom-built Fender Esquire. He used an Ebow (an electronic device that bows the guitar strings with an energy field) to open this song, a suggestion from Alex.

Producer/Engineer Andy Johns used the term "spanked" to describe the monitor speakers in the 5150 Studio the first time he saw them. The band quickly adopted the term into their vocabulary and in this song.

Mike used a 5-string Music Man, 4-string Music Man, and a Heartfield 6- string bass for this track. He had Sterling Ball shave the necks down on the Music Man basses to give them more of a Fender Jazz bass feel.

In concert, Eddie had a doubleneck guitar/bass that he played for this song. However, there were problems with delay time between the guitar, the wireless system, and the amps, which made this song increasingly difficult to play live, so it was eventually dropped from the set list.

The song also appears on the Live: Right Here, Right Now album.
