Could This Be Magic?
This song, from the Women and Children First album, represents the first time Eddie recorded with a slide guitar (Ted Templeman's idea). He practiced it for a few days, but really didn't know how he'd play the song until the time came. This song prepared him for the next song on which he used a slide: "Dirty Movies". Dave accompanied Eddie by playing acoustic rhythm guitar.
The band tossed around the idea of having a horse sounding off or a cow mooing at the end of the track.
It was raining on the day of recording, so the band opened the bay windows of the studio to add some "outside sound" to the song.
Nicolette Larson helped with background vocals - the first time an outside artist had appeared on a Van Halen recording. In 1978, Eddie made a guest appearance on Nicolette's album, Nicolette (produced by Ted Templeman and engineered by Donn Landee) and is listed as "?" in the album's credits.
