Can't Stop Lovin' You
The song came about when producer Bruce Fairbairn asked Eddie for a pop tune for the Balance album. Rather than dig through his mountains of tape, Eddie wrote the music from scratch. It was one of the last tracks recorded for Balance. It later appeared on the Best of Volume 1 album.
The "Ray" Sammy refers to at the end of the song is Ray Charles, who had a hit with the Don Gibson original, I Can't Stop Loving You. Ray's version sold 2 million copies and topped the U.S. charts for five weeks in 1962. It was certified as the year's best-selling single.
Eddie used an EBMM equipped with a piezo pickup to get the acoustic/electric rhythm sound in this song.
When Eddie's guitar was delivered to the set of the video for this song, he opened the case and discovered it had arrived without a strap. Kevin Dugan was called upon to rig something together to enable Eddie to properly hold the guitar.
This video also marked the first time a little person had been used in a Van Halen video since the Dave era. The video was produced by Fiz Oliver and directed by Peter Christopherson.
